Race for the Reichstag

These are some shots of the original Crossfire demonstration game – the “Race for the Reichstag”!

This is an overview of downtown Berlin c.1945 after, Bomber Command and the 8th Air force have done some re-modelling. As modelled by Chris Leach. You are looking at the park to the left and, the Brandenburg Gate at the centre, with the Reichstag in the background. Knocked out German vehicles litter the streets. The Soviet Shock troops are massing in the burnt out buildings in the foreground.

Several turns later. The Soviet assaults have successfully made it into the park and, an IS-II leading a SU-122 have made it to the foot of the Brandenburg gate. An assault squad takes cover behind the burnt out remains of a StuG III and a Tiger in the centre of the picture. Every approach is swept by MG fire and snipers pick off the unwary.
Several turns later. The Soviet assaults have successfully made it into the park and, an IS-II leading a SU-122 have made it to the foot of the Brandenburg gate. An assault squad takes cover behind the burnt out remains of a StuG III and a Tiger in the centre of the picture. Every approach is swept by MG fire and snipers pick off the unwary.
The Russian assault is already beginning to suffer as both lead tanks are destroyed (cotton wool smoke billowing up). The tank-destroyer teams of the Volksturm are roaming the rubble around the foot of the Brandenburg Gate (centre). They are tearing the heart out of the Russian attack but, at a terrible cost to themselves. Russian casualties (just off the playing surface) are also mounting. It is becoming a test of wills and a meat grinder of men. In the background seated on the left is Arty Conliffe, beside him Malcolm Graham (one of the "White Rock Wargamers").
